Spanish judge Juan Carlos Peinado faces disciplinary inquiry over alleged disrespect to counsel
The Consejo General del Poder Judicial (CGPJ) has opened a disciplinary inquiry against Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, the magistrate presiding over the high‑profile “Begoña Gómez” case. The action follows a formal complaint filed by the union Manos Limpias, represented by lawyer Víctor Soriano, which alleges that Peinado treated a defense lawyer with “manifestly disrespectful” conduct, raised his voice, and refused a request to substitute the lawyer during the preliminary hearing on 15 June.
The disciplinary promoter, Ricardo Conde, announced on 29 July that an informational diligence would be initiated. The CGPJ’s permanent commission was split evenly (four votes for and four against), and President Isabel Perelló cast the deciding vote. The inquiry will determine whether Peinado’s behaviour constitutes a disciplinary fault, which could result in sanctions ranging from a warning to removal from office. The case remains under investigation, and no final decision has been issued.
The proceedings are part of broader scrutiny of judicial conduct in Spain, but they are limited to the alleged treatment of counsel in this specific hearing.
