Juan Carlos Valencia González becomes head of Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel

Juan Carlos Valencia González, a dual U.S.-Mexican citizen born in Santa Ana, California, has been identified as the new leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) following the death of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera in February 2026. Valencia, 41, is the son of former Milenio cartel co‑founder Armando Valencia and Rosalinda González, and the stepson of El Mencho, linking him to both the Valencia family and the Cuinis money‑laundering network. The U.S. National Counterterrorism Center listed him as the CJNG’s successor, and the DEA has charged him with large‑scale trafficking of cocaine and methamphetamine, while the U.S. State Department has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture. Mexican authorities note his operational control over CJNG activities in western and north‑western states such as Michoacán, Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Guanajuato. His American citizenship raises questions for U.S. law‑enforcement about permissible targeting and cooperation with Mexican forces.

The leadership transition is expected to influence cartel dynamics, potentially reshaping violence patterns in the region and prompting coordinated U.S.–Mexico efforts to address the expanded transnational threat.
