Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa killed in Guatemala sports center attack

Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa, a prominent anti-corruption lawyer and former head of Guatemala’s Tax Administration (SAT), was killed in an armed attack at the Campo Marte sports complex in Guatemala City. The shooting, which occurred while Solórzano Foppa was playing soccer, also claimed the life of Gustavo Adolfo Aguilar Gamarro. Forensic reports indicate Solórzano Foppa died from gunshot wounds to the skull, while Aguilar Gamarro died from a wound to the thorax.

Following the attack, police arrested two brothers, Rigoberto and Daniel Choc Toz, who were identified as delivery riders. Authorities seized a carbine-style firearm and a motorcycle at the scene. However, a judge later released both brothers due to a lack of merit. The investigation remains under judicial reserve, with the Public Ministry noting that the FBI is providing assistance in the case.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo condemned the murder, calling it a cowardly act intended to intimidate the government. UN Secretary-General António Guterres also issued a condemnation, demanding an exhaustive and impartial investigation to ensure justice for the victims.
