Juan José Ganuza approved as CNMC president by Spanish Congress

Juan José Ganuza, the government’s candidate to lead Spain’s National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), passed the scrutiny of the Congress’ Economy Committee. The vote recorded 19 in favour and 17 against, with the only objections coming from the Popular Party and Vox. Ganuza pledged to "fight for the CNMC to be an independent institution" and highlighted his priorities for the next six years, including regulation of the digital economy, oversight of public procurement worth billions, and a review of merger rules to balance innovation with price impacts.

The committee also gave its approval to the three other proposed CNMC councillors – former cabinet chief Carmen Balsa, former ERC deputy Joan Capdevila, and academic Marina Echebarría – after similar partisan vetos. Their appointments now await formal ratification by the Council of Ministers.
