Juan Orlando Hernández faces fraud and money laundering charges

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández appeared before the Supreme Court of Justice for an initial hearing in the Pandora II case. He faces accusations of fraud and money laundering, specifically regarding the alleged transfer of 62 million lempiras into various bank accounts used for political campaigning.

The Public Ministry has presented evidence, including documents such as appointment agreements, fund transfers, and account creation records. While the prosecution has identified 19 pieces of evidence so far, the defense has requested one week to analyze the full scope of the investigation, which they claim is vast. Two protected witnesses are expected to testify in upcoming proceedings.

During the hearing, Hernández denied the allegations, stating he would not remain silent against what he characterized as “political persecution.” Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has definitively acquitted former President Porfirio Lobo Sosa of his involvement in the same corruption scheme. The next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18.
