Juan Orlando Hernández Returns to Honduras After U.S. Conviction and Trump Pardon

Former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández, once touted as a U.S. ally in drug‑security cooperation, was extradited to the United States after leaving office in early 2022. In March 2024 a New York federal jury convicted him of drug‑trafficking and weapons offenses and sentenced him to 45 years in prison.

President Donald Trump granted Hernández a full pardon at the end of 2025, allowing his release. On 26 July Hernández re‑entered Honduras after the country’s Supreme Court suspended an arrest warrant linked to corruption charges. Analysts fear the weak Honduran justice system and the return of Hernández’s party to power could lead to his acquittal.
