Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández Returns After US Pardon

Juan Orlando Hernández, former president of Honduras (2014‑2022), arrived back in his country on 26 July 2026 after U.S. President Donald Trump granted him a presidential pardon that erased a 45‑year sentence for drug and weapons trafficking. He landed at Palmerola International Airport on a private flight from Miami and was met by his wife Ana García, mother Elvira Alvarado, three of his children and supporters who gathered in buses and on foot.

Hernández will appear before a Honduran court on 3 August 2026 to answer fraud and money‑laundering accusations linked to the “Pandora II” corruption probe, which alleges the diversion of roughly $11 million in public funds for campaign use. An international arrest warrant was suspended in June, allowing him to enter without detention. While the U.S. pardon clears his federal conviction, it does not affect the pending domestic case, and political opponents have denounced the pardon as U.S. interference ahead of Honduras’s recent elections.
