Fernando Cerimedo denies AI manipulation claims in Bolivia audio controversy
In Bolivia, political consultant Fernando Cerimedo is facing intense scrutiny following the release of controversial audio recordings. One recording, involving deputy Alejandro Reyes, features a voice attributed to Cerimedo suggesting that the government should risk casualties during road blockades to resolve conflicts. Cerimedo and his lawyer, Margarita Arce, have denied the authenticity of these recordings, claiming they were manipulated using artificial intelligence. They allege that real conversations were illegally obtained and then altered with sophisticated AI tools to insert false statements, specifically targeting the segment where he appears to favor violent outcomes.
Bolivian Governor Juan Pablo Velasco has also weighed in, claiming that Cerimedo contacted him following the 2025 elections to mock his defeat and admit to a “guerra sucia” (dirty war) and staged political maneuvers. Cerimedo, who previously served as an advisor to President Rodrigo Paz, is currently detained in Chonchocoro prison. While his defense maintains that the most inflammatory parts of the audio are fabricated, the controversy has sparked significant debate regarding political stability and the use of deepfake technology in regional politics.
