Juazeiro do Norte implements new recycling and waste management structure
Juazeiro do Norte is implementing a new solid waste management structure to improve the handling of domestic refuse. Managed by the Autarquia Municipal de Meio Ambiente de Juazeiro do Norte (AMAJU), the initiative involves transitioning domestic waste to a sanitary landfill where recyclable materials will be sorted by registered waste picker associations.
The new facility will feature specialized equipment, including a sorting conveyor belt, scales for weighing materials, and a press for compacting recyclables. It will also include a communal area with a food court to improve working conditions for professionals.
Under this plan, the current controlled landfill will cease receiving domestic waste and will be repurposed exclusively for debris and pruning services. This transition aims to align the municipality with the National Solid Waste Policy. All revenue from the sale of separated recyclables will be distributed directly to the workers without municipal fees.
