Juazeiro do Norte waste management initiatives

Juazeiro do Norte has initiated several programs to improve urban sanitation and waste management. The city began expanding its ‘Ecopontos’ network in neighborhoods such as Campo Alegre and Jardim Gonzaga to prevent irregular waste disposal in public spaces. Supported by the Secretariat of Infrastructure and the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, these sites are designed to collect construction debris, pruning waste, and electronic equipment.

Following these efforts, the municipality is implementing a new solid waste management structure managed by the Autarquia Municipal de Meio Ambiente de Juazeiro do Norte (AMAJU). This plan involves transitioning domestic waste to a sanitary landfill where registered waste picker associations will sort recyclables using specialized equipment, including conveyor belts and compacting presses. Under this new system, the existing controlled landfill will be repurposed exclusively for debris and pruning services to align with the National Solid Waste Policy.
