Judge Juan Carlos Peinado retires amid Begoña Gómez investigation
Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has reached the mandatory retirement age of 72, concluding his tenure as the instructor of the case involving Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The investigation concerns alleged influence peddling and embezzlement.
Prior to his retirement, Peinado requested tax records from the Tax Agency to determine potential fines based on Gómez’s economic capacity. While the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) stated that Peinado’s actions did not warrant disciplinary measures, the legal proceedings continue.
In a new development, Cristina Álvarez, an advisor to Begoña Gómez, has filed an appeal with the Provincial Court of Madrid. The defense seeks to annul a preliminary hearing held on September 8, arguing that the 24-hour notice provided violated her right to defense by preventing her attendance. If successful, this appeal could nullify the order sending both Gómez and Álvarez to trial by a jury.
