Judge Juan Carlos Peinado retires after sending Begoña Gómez to trial

Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has retired from the Spanish judiciary after reaching the mandatory age of 72. His final week in office was marked by the decision to send Begoña Gómez, wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and her assistant Cristina Álvarez to trial before a jury. The charges against Gómez include alleged influence peddling and embezzlement.

Following his retirement, Justice Minister Félix Bolaños escalated his legal conflict with the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). Bolaños filed an administrative appeal challenging the Council's decision to deny him full access to the case files regarding his complaints against Peinado. The Minister accused the CGPJ of attempting to grant the judge 'total impunity' by stalling disciplinary investigations until his retirement became effective.

Peinado's investigation into Gómez, which began in April 2024 following a complaint by the group Manos Limpias, has been a central point of political tension in Spain. While the prosecution has sought dismissal in various instances, the Madrid Provincial Court has ratified the decision to proceed with a jury trial.
