Honduras faces judicial delays and prison security challenges

Human rights organizations in Honduras are calling for the expedited judicial process against former Joint Chiefs of Staff General Roosevelt Hernández. Representatives from Asopodehu and Joprodeh have filed an amicus curiae brief to urge the Court of Appeals to resolve pending resources. They expressed concern regarding potential delays or political interests that might prevent a public oral trial related to alleged attacks on freedom of expression and democracy.

Separately, the National Penitentiary Institute (INP) is working to strengthen security technology to block extortion calls from within prisons. Director Walter Amador Lacayo admitted that despite signal blockers and daily inspections, authorities have discovered conventional and even satellite phones in several facilities over the last four months. The INP is seeking more advanced technology and increased personnel to address these security gaps.
