Argentine judicial system independence and reform concerns

Overview

The Argentine judicial system is facing scrutiny regarding both political interference and structural inefficiency. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Margaret Satterthwaite, warned that public criticism of judicial rulings by government officials constitutes an “abuse of power” that threatens democratic institutions and the separation of powers. This follows instances where executive officials publicly questioned judges.

Simultaneously, there is growing public demand for reform to address procedural delays and case backlogs. In Catamarca, citizens have called for an independent audit body to hold officials accountable, with some proposing salary reductions or removal from office for persistent delays. While Justice Minister Fernanda Rosales has acknowledged the need for consequences regarding missed deadlines, critics maintain that provincial authorities have not implemented sufficient operational reforms.
