Andean border passes face closures due to weather and sanitary controls

Severe weather conditions and infrastructure projects are causing significant disruptions to major international and domestic transit routes in South America.

In the Andes, the Cristo Redentor International Pass has undergone preventive closures due to incoming snow and adverse weather forecasts. This has impacted heavy cargo transport and tourism between Argentina and Chile. In response to previous delays, Chilean authorities have implemented intensified sanitary inspections for food shipments arriving from Mendoza to ensure product safety. Additionally, the Jujuy government in Argentina is providing medical assistance, including oxygen and medication, to travelers and transport workers stranded near the Jama International Pass due to inclement weather.

In El Salvador, the Los Chorros section of the Pan-American Highway is facing total closures scheduled for late August. These closures are necessary for controlled rock blasting to facilitate the construction of a new viaduct and highway expansion.

In Costa Rica, judicial investigations have necessitated temporary closures of Route 32 near Guápiles, affecting traffic between San José and Limón.
