Julio Iglesias faces sexual abuse allegations and defamation investigation
Spanish authorities are advancing legal proceedings against singer Julio Iglesias following allegations of sexual abuse and labor exploitation. The National Court (Audiencia Nacional) has been deemed competent to investigate a complaint filed by two former employees, identified by the pseudonyms Rebeca and Laura. The women, who worked as a domestic worker and a physiotherapist, allege that sexual assaults, non-consensual touching, and humiliations occurred in 2021 at the artist's properties in the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic. The complaint, supported by Women’s Link Worldwide, includes allegations of human trafficking for forced labor and servitude.
Julio Iglesias has categorically rejected the accusations, stating he has never abused or coerced any woman and intends to defend his dignity against what he calls false claims.
In a separate legal development, a Madrid court is investigating the news outlet elDiario.es, its director Ignacio Escolar, and several journalists. This investigation stems from a lawsuit filed by Iglesias, who claims certain publications violated his honor and moral integrity. The court is examining potential crimes of slander and defamation, while also evaluating whether the reported information is protected under the right to freedom of expression and information.
