Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project inaugurated in Tanzania

Tanzania has officially inaugurated the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project on the Rufiji River in the Coast Region. The massive infrastructure project, which cost approximately US$2.8 billion (7.452 trillion Shillings), was financed entirely by the Tanzanian government.

Constructed by an Egyptian consortium comprising Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric, the project was completed following five years of work. The workforce included approximately 1,700 Egyptian engineers and technicians and a total of 12,000 workers. The hydropower plant features nine turbines with a total generating capacity of 2,115 megawatts.

In the 12 months ending May 31, 2026, the plant contributed roughly 44.9 percent of the electricity supplied to Tanzania's national grid. The project aims to meet growing domestic energy demands and position Tanzania as a regional energy hub. The government has already established agreements to sell surplus electricity to Zambia and is in discussions with other neighboring countries, including Kenya.
