Egypt-Tanzania economic and infrastructure cooperation

Overview

Tanzania and Egypt have initiated various economic and infrastructure developments. Tanzania has expanded its public debt market to allow foreign investors to purchase Treasury bills and sovereign bonds, while the International Finance Corporation facilitated a 100 million dollar offshore bond to support small and medium-sized enterprises.

In Egypt, the government approved ‘The Spine’ multifunctional development project in New Cairo and authorized a new logistics center at the Alexandria Port. Additionally, Egypt has moved toward renewable energy integration through a power grid modernization agreement with the European Investment Bank and a partnership to construct a 407-megawatt wind farm.

Cooperation between the two nations has centered on the Julius Nyerere Dam and hydroelectric power station in Tanzania. Constructed by an Egyptian consortium including Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric, the project cost approximately $2.8 billion (7.452 trillion Shillings) and utilized a workforce of roughly 1,700 Egyptian engineers and technicians alongside 12,000 total workers.

Following its official inauguration on the Rufiji River, the 2,115-megawatt facility has become a cornerstone of the national energy sector. In the 12 months ending May 31, 2026, the plant contributed approximately 44.9 percent of the electricity supplied to Tanzania’s national grid. This increased capacity positions Tanzania to serve as a regional energy hub, supported by existing agreements to export electricity to Zambia and ongoing discussions with other neighboring countries, including Kenya.
