Three firefighters killed in Greek wildfires on Crete and Peloponnese FAST-MOVING

On 29 July 2026 a fast‑moving wildfire broke out in the Rethymno region of Crete near the village of Krya Vrysi. Strong winds of up to Beaufort 7 (around 100 km/h) drove the fire across agricultural and forested land. Two Greek firefighters became trapped while driving between fire fronts and died in the blaze. A third firefighter died in a separate incident on the mainland in the Peloponnese near Gytheio.

Authorities ordered the evacuation of residents and tourists from Krya Vrysi and nearby villages such as Sakhtouria, Melabes and Triopetra. About 156 firefighters, 33 fire engines, eight helicopters and four aircraft were deployed to combat the flames, with additional support from the EU Emergency‑Response Coordination Centre, which warned that Greece and Italy face a heightened wildfire risk in the coming weeks.

Local officials expressed condolences to the families of the fallen and pledged continued support for the fire‑fighting crews.
