June 2026 volcanic activity surge spans Iceland, Indonesia, Italy and Central America

During the week of 11‑17 June 2026, volcanic monitoring agencies reported new unrest at five volcanoes: Bárðarbunga (Iceland), Dempo (Indonesia), Etna (Italy), Nevados de Chillán (Chile) and Titan Ridge (Papua New Guinea). Ongoing activity continued at seventeen other sites, including Aira (Japan), Dukono (Indonesia), Great Sitkin (US), Ibu (Indonesia), Kilauea (US), and Shiveluch (Russia).

Later in the month, heightened eruptions were noted at Santiaguito and Fuego (Guatemala), Popocatépetl (Mexico), and Reventador (Ecuador). Indonesia’s Semeru volcano showed lava‑dome growth and ash emissions, while Ibu and Dukono produced ash plumes reaching up to 4.5 km. Kilauea’s summit inflation was measured but no eruption occurred. European volcanoes displayed mixed trends, with Etna’s magma effusion and Shiveluch’s elevated seismicity. Authorities issued alerts, urging residents to avoid restricted zones and stay prepared for possible evacuations, but no immediate threats to major urban centres were reported.
