Jung Chang-seong referred to prosecutors for murder of Chinese student
Jung Chang-seong, a 31-year-old Chinese university lecturer, has been referred to prosecutors by Gyeongsan police on charges including murder, body mutilation, abandonment, and obstruction of justice. Jung is accused of killing a 25-year-old Chinese female graduate student at his residence in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan, on August 20.
Investigators believe the motive was to prevent the victim from revealing their romantic relationship to the university, which Jung feared would lead to his dismissal. Following the murder, Jung allegedly mutilated the victim's body and disposed of remains in five different locations across South Korea, including Gyeongju, Sangju, Daegu, and Gunpo.
To evade detection, Jung reportedly filed a false missing-person report and disguised himself as a woman to travel to Dongdaegu Station while carrying the victim's phone. A psychopathy diagnostic test (PCL-R) resulted in a score below 25, meaning he did not meet the standard classification for a psychopath.
Police are also investigating allegations that Jung had previously used his position to pressure other international students into relationships by threatening their academic progress. Authorities continue to search for remaining remains and are looking into potential additional crimes committed during his tenure as a lecturer.
