Arrest of Chinese lecturer in South Korean student murder

Overview

Zheng Changsheng (also identified as Jeong Chang-seong), a 31-year-old Chinese anatomy lecturer, has been transferred to the prosecution following the murder and dismemberment of a 25-year-old Chinese female graduate student at the Catholic University of Daegu.

Zheng admitted to killing the victim, his former pupil, during an argument in his Hayang-eup studio apartment. Investigations suggest the motive was to prevent the victim from revealing their romantic relationship to the university, which Zheng feared would cost him his teaching position. To evade detection, Zheng allegedly dismembered the body and disposed of parts in various locations, including mountains and trash sites in Gyeongju, Gunpo, Sangju, Daegu, and Gyeonggi Province.

He also reportedly dressed in women’s clothing to mimic the victim, traveled via taxi to Dongdaegu Station to turn off her mobile phone, and filed a false missing person report. While Zheng faces charges including murder, damage to a corpse, kidnapping, concealment, and obstruction of official duties, a psychopathy diagnostic test (PCL-R) resulted in a score below 25, meaning he does not meet the standard clinical threshold for a psychopath.

Authorities are continuing to search for remaining remains and are investigating allegations that Zheng previously used his position to pressure other international students, allegedly threatening to interfere with their academic progress or graduation if they did not comply with his personal advances.
