Sonora confirms first screwworm case, triggering sanitary protocols
The confirmation of the first screwworm case in Sonora, specifically in a bovine in the municipality of Álamos, has left only Baja California and Baja California Sur as the remaining states in Mexico free of the parasite. According to Senasica, Mexico has recorded 38,820 cumulative cases of screwworm between November 20, 2024, and August 18, 2026, with 1,963 cases currently active.
In response to the detection in Sonora, authorities have established a 20-kilometer sanitary perimeter around the site in Munihuasa. Containment measures include the release of 360,000 sterile flies to disrupt the parasite's reproduction cycle and the application of preventive treatments to adult cattle and newborn calves. The Consejo Nacional Agropecuario warns that the economic impact of the infestation could exceed 2 billion dollars annually.
In Chihuahua, authorities are also responding to cases, including a detection in a dog in Samalayuca, by deploying dispersal cameras in Ciudad Juárez to release sterile flies. The infestation affects both livestock, primarily cattle, and domestic animals such as dogs. Authorities continue to monitor animal movement and urge producers to report any wounds or suspicious symptoms immediately.
