Jurgen Klopp receives praise for dual-squad strategy for Germany
Germany national football team coach Jurgen Klopp has received praise for his decision to utilize two distinct squads, totaling 44 players, for his first four international matches. This strategy is intended to manage the workload during the Nations League while rebuilding the national team ahead of Euro 2028.
Former German captain and 1990 World Cup winner Lothar Matthäus described the idea as ‘excellent’ and ‘completely logical,’ noting that with four matches scheduled within 9 to 10 days amidst active club seasons, rotating squads is a practical approach. German Football Association Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke also expressed approval of the plan.
The squad includes key players such as Jamal Musiala and captain Joshua Kimmich for the opening matches against the Netherlands and Greece, though they will not participate in the subsequent fixtures against Serbia and Greece. The approach aims to gather data on a wider pool of players, including 11 debutants, while minimizing the time players are away from their clubs.
