Supreme Court Collegium recommends new High Court Chief Justices

The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, has recommended the appointment of new Chief Justices for several High Courts. Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal of the Chhattisgarh High Court has been recommended for the Rajasthan High Court, a move following concerns raised regarding the functioning of the Rajasthan High Court. Justice Alpesh Yeshvant Kogje of the Gujarat High Court is proposed as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati of the Rajasthan High Court is recommended for the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

Separately, Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan addressed the 13th convocation of National Law University Delhi, emphasizing the importance of academic freedom. He stated that universities must be spaces where students can question established positions and express dissenting views without fear of punitive action, calling such intolerance unconstitutional. Justice Bhuyan also advocated for a renewed debate on appointing ‘distinguished jurists’ to the Supreme Court under Article 124(3) of the Constitution, noting that this provision has not been utilized in over 76 years.
