Justin Gaethje addresses Arman Tsarukyan's delayed UFC title shot
UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje has commented on the delayed title opportunities for contender Arman Tsarukyan. Speaking on the ‘Mighty’ podcast, Gaethje suggested that Tsarukyan’s previous withdrawal from a scheduled bout against Islam Makhachev at UFC 311 explains the promotion's caution regarding his next title shot.
Gaethje speculated that Tsarukyan’s reported back injury during that event might have been a cover for an inability to make weight, though he noted he was “totally speculating.” Gaethje remarked that Tsarukyan has “been doing so much to not fight for the title” and stated, “we all make our own bed.”
Tsarukyan is scheduled to face Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331 in a bout that has been discussed as a potential number one contender eliminator, though UFC President Dana White has not confirmed this status.
Separately, Gaethje expressed respect for Islam Makhachev’s discipline and work ethic, despite noting that he does not personally favor Makhachev’s wrestling-heavy fighting style.
