UFC fighter Islam Makhachev has been the subject of various professional discussions regarding potential matchups and fighting styles.

Initially, Makhachev expressed interest in a boxing match against Conor McGregor following discussions with Turki Alalshikh, a co-founder of Zuffa Boxing. Makhachev indicated he would be open to the idea, suggesting Alalshikh consult Dana White, and noted his confidence in competing against other MMA fighters in a boxing ring despite not being a professional boxer.

Lightweight fighter Justin Gaethje has commented on Makhachev, expressing respect for his discipline while stating he is not a fan of Makhachev’s wrestling-heavy style, noting, “I desire something else when I watch MMA.”

Gaethje also addressed the cancellation of a scheduled rematch between Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 311, which occurred after Tsarukyan withdrew due to reported back pain. Gaethje speculated the withdrawal might have been related to weight-cutting issues, though he noted he was “totally speculating.”

Gaethje further suggested that Tsarukyan’s previous withdrawal explains the promotion's caution regarding his next title opportunities, remarking that Tsarukyan has “been doing so much to not fight for the title” and stating, “we all make our own bed.” Tsarukyan is currently scheduled to face Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331 in a bout discussed as a potential number one contender eliminator, though UFC President Dana White has not confirmed this status.
