JWST Detects Unexplained Infrared Signature on Titan and Pluto

Scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope have identified an identical absorption feature at about 5.11 µm in infrared spectra from both Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, and the dwarf planet Pluto. The signal appears in data from JWST’s Near‑Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) collected on 4 Nov 2022 and from the Mid‑Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on 11 July 2023 for Titan, and in MIRI observations of Pluto on 4 May 2023. While the wavelength matches closely, the feature is roughly three times broader on Pluto, suggesting differing surface conditions.

Modeling indicates the absorption cannot be reproduced by known atmospheric gases, pointing to a surface origin on both bodies. The exact chemical or material responsible remains unidentified, leaving researchers with an unresolved puzzle about a possible shared chemical pathway on two very different solar‑system objects.
