Kaduna suspends Independence Day celebrations as residents welcome security drive
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has approved the immediate suspension of the state’s 66th Independence Day celebrations, originally scheduled for October 1, 2026. The decision was announced by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, and took effect on September 28, 2026.
In a separate development regarding the national anniversary, residents of Kaduna have expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s security recruitment drive. The plan involves recruiting additional military and police personnel, establishing new military divisions and barracks in previously uncovered areas, and deploying forest guards to combat banditry.
Local residents and business owners noted that improved welfare packages and salaries for security personnel could boost morale. However, community members also emphasized the need for transparent investigations into security operations and the importance of effective command structures to ensure rapid responses to attacks.
