Kagi halts Orion browser development for Linux and Windows
Kagi has announced the termination of official development for its Orion browser on Linux and Windows platforms. The company has decided to refocus its resources exclusively on the Apple ecosystem, specifically macOS and iOS.
As an independent company funded solely by user subscriptions without venture capital, Kagi cited the immense technical and financial challenges of maintaining a multi-platform browser. The development of Orion is unique for using the WebKit rendering engine rather than Chromium, and its ability to run Chrome and Firefox extensions added significant complexity to cross-platform maintenance.
To support the open-source community, Kagi will release the existing code for the abandoned versions within thirty days. While the current Linux Beta version in Flatpak format will continue to function, Kagi advises against using it as a primary browser since it will no longer receive official updates.
