Kagi Orion browser development shift

Overview

Kagi has announced the termination of official development for its Orion web browser on Linux and Windows platforms. The company intends to refocus its resources exclusively on the Apple ecosystem, specifically macOS and iOS.

Kagi cited the technical and financial challenges of maintaining a multi-platform browser as an independent entity without venture capital. The company noted that Orion’s use of the WebKit rendering engine and its ability to run Chrome and Firefox extensions added significant complexity to cross-platform maintenance.

To support the community, Kagi will open-source the existing code for the Linux and Windows versions within 30 days. While the current Linux Beta in Flatpak format will remain functional, Kagi advises against using it as a primary browser because it will no longer receive official updates or core maintenance. Additionally, the previously planned Windows launch for late 2026 has been canceled.
