EU adopts 1,600 new sanctions against Russia as election debates continue

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas announced that the European Union has adopted nearly 1,600 new sanctions targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex. This represents the largest single expansion of the bloc’s sanctions list since the conflict began, with over half of the new measures targeting the production chain for ballistic missiles.

Regarding the possibility of elections in Ukraine, Kallas stated that she is confident elections will be held if sufficient pressure is applied to Russia to end the war. She noted that most constitutions prohibit elections during active warfare and emphasized the need to maintain national unity.

In response to discussions regarding Ukrainian elections, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Vladimir Putin is prepared to order a cessation of attacks on Ukraine specifically on election day, provided Kyiv chooses to hold votes. However, Peskov suggested that the Ukrainian leadership lacks the political will to hold them.

Additionally, the EU is exploring the use of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's reconstruction, a move Kallas described as logical given Russia's responsibility for the damages. Meanwhile, President Zelensky expressed readiness for an energy ceasefire but noted that Russia has yet to meet the conditions proposed by US President Donald Trump.
