Kaja Kallas expresses readiness for dialogue with Russia on condition of terms
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has stated she is prepared to engage in telephone dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin or Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, provided such an opportunity arises. However, she emphasized that she does not support initiating negotiations under Russian conditions.
Kallas noted that the European Union currently cannot act as a full mediator in the Ukraine conflict due to its support for Kyiv. She also expressed skepticism regarding recent peace-seeking efforts by American envoys, suggesting that future processes should include individuals with a deeper understanding of how Russia operates.
Addressing the humanitarian and security situation, Kallas warned that Russia is intensifying attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure ahead of winter. To mitigate the impact on civilians, the EU is providing 75 million euros for heating supplies, blankets, and portable water systems. She further noted that EU sanctions are impacting the Russian economy and confirmed that a new sanctions package is being prepared.
