Kaja Kallas warns of brutal winter ahead for Ukraine
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated in Paris that Ukraine faces another brutal war winter, noting there is little hope for peace in the near future. While acknowledging a new diplomatic momentum, Kallas emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions suggest a different reality, citing recent intense attacks on Kyiv and the sinking of civilian vessels in the Black Sea.
To increase the cost for Russia, the EU has adopted its most comprehensive sanctions since the start of the war, with further measures being prepared. Kallas noted that joint actions and controls by France and other EU members are slowing down the so-called ‘Russian shadow fleet,’ forcing them to use longer and more expensive routes.
Regarding European defense, Kallas highlighted the recent EU Defense Readiness Report, stating that while record sums are being allocated, funds must be converted into actual operational capacities to build a stronger Europe within a stronger NATO. Additionally, she addressed Middle East tensions, warning of escalation risks between the US and Iran and noting the role of the EU ‘Aspides’ maritime operation in maintaining cargo and oil flow through the Red Sea.
