EU officials warn of escalating Russian hybrid attacks across Europe

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has warned that Russia is endangering lives across Europe through an escalation of hybrid attacks, sabotage attempts, and airspace violations. During a press conference with Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, Kallas noted that Russian missiles and drones recently violated Moldovan airspace.

On September 30, Russia conducted a major coordinated aerial campaign against Ukraine's energy grid, striking power plants and infrastructure near Kyiv. On the same day, the Moldovan Ministry of Defense reported that three drones entered the country's airspace near the Ukrainian border.

In Germany, Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned of an increasing number of Russian hybrid attacks, including cyberattacks and drone activity. German authorities have previously linked Moscow to a drone attack attempt at Leipzig airport in August. Martin Engler, head of Germany's BND, further cautioned that Germany faces a risk of being drawn into an armed conflict with Russia as Moscow intensifies its shadow warfare against European democracies.
