Thessaloniki Metro expands to Kalamaia with new bus routes
The Thessaloniki Metro is expanding its service to the Kalamaia region, marking a significant update to the city's transportation network. The expansion includes a new 4.78-kilometer underground route with five new stations: Nomarchia, Kalamaia, Aretsou, Nea Krini, and Mikra. The service is expected to reduce travel time from Mikra to the city center to approximately 15 minutes.
To coincide with the metro expansion, the Thessaloniki Transport Organization (OSETH) is implementing a new bus network design. Most new and modified bus lines, including routes M2, 6A, 6B, 7T, 33, 33A, 33B, 39, 39A, 39B, and 39S, will commence operations on September 1, 2026. However, the X3 line, which connects Mikra Metro Station to Macedonia Airport, will begin service earlier on August 27, 2026, to align with the official inauguration of the metro extension.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Mikra terminal station and is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
