Kalamata faces urban planning concerns amid construction surge

Georgios Karabatos, Executive Director of the ‘Odos tis Elias’ cultural organization and former President of the Messinia Chamber of Commerce, has issued an open letter raising concerns regarding the rapid urban and investment growth in Kalamata.

According to the letter, approximately 240 apartment buildings are currently under construction. This surge in construction is accompanied by an increase in large-scale tourism and residential investments, alongside an uncontrolled expansion of short-term rentals. Karabatos questions whether this development is meeting actual housing needs for residents, youth, and students, or if it is primarily serving as investment products and tourist accommodations.

The letter emphasizes the need for comprehensive urban planning, including studies on urban and climate resilience, to ensure that the city's infrastructure, traffic, and environment can sustain such growth. Karabatos warns that without proper rules and public consultation, the city may be developing at the expense of its own future.
