Kalamata International Dance Festival opens with premieres

The 32nd International Dance Festival of Kalamata began on 17 July with a high‑profile opening night. The program featured the commemorative exhibition “Zouzou Nikoloudi: Methodology as Action” and a sold‑out performance of “He Who Falls” by renowned French choreographer Yoann Bourgeois, which earned enthusiastic applause. Greek government officials, including General Secretary of Contemporary Culture Eleni Doundoulaki, attended the ceremony, and the mayor of Kalamata, Thanasis Vasilopoulos, highlighted the festival’s role in promoting the city’s cultural identity.

Later in the week, on 22 July, the festival presented the dance work “Amazigh in Situ” at the ancient theatre of Messene. Choreographer Filipe Lourenço adapted the traditional Ahidous, a collective Berber dance from central Morocco, for five performers, aiming to merge ancestral traditions with contemporary expression and involve the audience in the performance. The music was provided by Amine Nouri, linking the event to the historic setting of Ancient Messene.
