Kalamata Student Housing Crisis Prompts Hospitality Association Proposals

The Messinia Hospitality Association (Σ.Ε.Μ.) has submitted a five‑point plan to tackle the acute student‑housing shortage in Kalamata, Greece. The proposals call for repurposing the vacant former theological school and the old army camp as modern student residences, offering tax incentives for long‑term leases, creating a renovation programme for aging properties, and coordinating actions with the municipal authorities of Kalamata and Messinia, the regional government and local chambers of commerce.

The initiative follows public remarks by Odysseas Spioliopoulos, dean of the School of Management at the University of Peloponnese, who highlighted rising rents, the proliferation of short‑term tourist rentals and the lack of suitable accommodation for the city’s student population. The association stresses that students contribute significantly to the local economy, tourism sector and demographic renewal, working in seasonal jobs and enriching cultural life throughout the academic year.
