Kalashnikov Group delivers large shipment of modernized SVDS sniper rifles

The Kalashnikov Group has delivered a large shipment of modernized SVDS sniper rifles to the Russian military as part of state contracts valid through 2026. The SVDS is a specialized variant of the classic SVD Dragunov, specifically designed for airborne forces, marines, and special operations units.

Key improvements over the standard SVD include a compact design featuring a folding metal stock and impact-resistant polymer components instead of traditional wood. These modifications reduce the overall length and improve ergonomics for soldiers wearing heavy body armor. The rifle utilizes a gas-operated semi-automatic mechanism and is capable of engaging infantry and unarmored targets at distances between 800 and 1,300 meters using 7.62x54mm ammunition.

Due to high demand on the battlefield, Kalashnikov reported that production of the SVDS increased thirteenfold in 2025 compared to 2024, a trend expected to continue through 2026.
