Kalemie industrial port construction shows significant progress
Jean-Pierre Bemba, the Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Communications, and Opening Up, recently inspected the progress of the new Kalemie industrial port in the Tanganyika province. The project, located in Mtoa, is considered a strategic infrastructure for the economic development and logistical unlocking of the region.
The development is a public-private partnership involving the Congolese state, Jintai Mining PTE Ltd, and Tembo Majengo Company SARL, with operations managed by Golden Lake Logistics SARL. The first phase of the project is valued at $70 million and includes dredging, the construction of quays, warehouses, administrative buildings, and logistical facilities.
Upon inspection, Bemba expressed satisfaction with the construction progress, noting that foundations for administrative buildings are complete and maritime work is advancing. Once finished, the port aims to handle an annual transit capacity of approximately 2 million tons of goods, serving as a regional commercial hub to facilitate trade with neighboring Tanzania, Burundi, and Zambia.
