Once complete, the port is expected to handle approximately 2 million tons of goods annually, facilitating trade with Tanzania, Burundi, and Zambia.

In Tanzania, significant expansions are underway at the Port of Dar es Salaam and Mtwara Port. Dar es Salaam has seen record container volumes, prompting the Egypt-based EDECS Group to secure a contract to redesign and rebuild seven cargo handling yards at Terminal 1. Meanwhile, the Tanzania Ports Authority is expanding Mtwara Port by increasing berths and deepening waters to accommodate larger vessels, strengthening the Southern Corridor link to Malawi.
