Kalie McCrystal missing near Matterhorn during record attempt

Search operations are underway for Canadian mountain runner Kalie McCrystal, who has been missing since September 1 near the Matterhorn. The 38-year-old was attempting to set a new mountain-running record on the Italian side of the peak, aiming to complete the ascent and descent in under five hours.

McCrystal’s last known contact was a social media photo taken at 3,830 meters above sea level near the Rifugio Jean-Antoine Carrel. She was reportedly wearing light clothing, including shorts and a light jacket, and carrying a trekking backpack. Search teams, including the Aosta Valley Alpine Rescue and the Italian Financial Police, have utilized helicopters and Recco reflectors, but efforts have so far been unsuccessful.

Authorities are currently investigating a second SIM card that McCrystal was believed to have in her possession to help determine her last active location. British Columbia MLA Amelia Boultbee, a long-time acquaintance, described McCrystal as a seasoned survivalist and an experienced mountaineer, noting that her disappearance is highly unusual given her physical condition and expertise.
