Disappearance of mountaineer Kalie McCrystal

Kalie McCrystal, a 38-year-old Canadian skyrunner and mountaineer from Squamish, British Columbia, remains missing while attempting a speed record on the Matterhorn. She was attempting to climb and descend the peak via the Lion Ridge in under five hours.

McCrystal, an Athletics Canada National Team trail runner, was last seen on September 1 near the Jean-Antoine Carrel hut at an altitude of approximately 3,830 metres. While her last confirmed contact was with a guide at an altitude exceeding 3,800 metres, reports indicate two individuals may have spotted her at an altitude of 4,250 metres. Her last known contact was a social media photo taken at the hut, where she was reportedly wearing light clothing and carrying a trekking backpack.

Search and rescue operations involving the Valle d'Aosta mountain rescue service and the Guardia di Finanza utilized helicopters, aerial reconnaissance, and RECCO detector technology. Aerial search efforts were suspended on September 8 due to the inaccessible nature of the terrain. However, local guides continue to assist in looking for tracks, and authorities are attempting to locate electronic signals to help pinpoint her position.

Hillary Gerardi, an elite skyrunner and friend of McCrystal, noted that the terrain involved in the sport is often unforgiving, featuring narrow routes with little to no margin for error. Gerardi stated that McCrystal was an experienced athlete who had successfully completed the route multiple times without mistake.

Authorities are investigating a second SIM card McCrystal was believed to have in her possession to help determine her last active location. Penticton-Summerland MLA Amelia Boultbee, an acquaintance of McCrystal, previously described her as a ‘seasoned survivalist’ who had shown no signs of distress during her last sighting via telescope.
