Kalshi negotiates $1B funding round at $40B valuation amid legal disputes

Kalshi, a prominent prediction market operator, is in advanced negotiations to raise approximately $1 billion in new funding. This potential round could value the company at roughly $40 billion, nearly doubling its $22 billion valuation from May 2026. Reports indicate that Sequoia Capital and Wellington Management are discussing leading the round, with Tiger Global Management and Dragoneer Investment Group also considering participation. The fundraising coincides with Kalshi's strategic expansion from event-based contracts into broader financial and economic derivatives markets.

Simultaneously, Kalshi faces significant legal challenges regarding its sports-related contracts. A federal appeals court in the Sixth Circuit recently ruled that Kalshi's sports contracts do not qualify as swaps under federal law. Consequently, the court determined that states such as Ohio and Tennessee may enforce their respective gambling laws against the platform. This decision deepens the regulatory conflict between federal oversight by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and state-level gambling authority.

On a broader industry scale, weekly trading volume across prediction markets has reached a record high of $20.4 billion. Kalshi currently maintains a dominant market position, accounting for approximately 77% of this weekly volume.
