Kalshi prediction markets see activity in AI and space sectors
Prediction markets, which allow traders to exchange contracts on the likelihood of specific future events, are gaining attention as a significant financial sector. On the Kalshi platform, recent trading volume has reached $1.3 million across various categories, including technology, geopolitics, and space exploration.
In the technology sector, traders are heavily favoring OpenAI over Anthropic, with a 93% probability assigned to OpenAI being the first of the two to launch an IPO before 2040. Regarding space exploration, the United States holds a 60% probability of being the next nation to send humans to the Moon before 2031, followed by China at 42.8%. Additionally, markets are tracking SpaceX's Mars ambitions, with a 23% chance of a successful landing before 2030.
Cathie Wood, founder of ARK Invest, has expressed support for Kalshi through the ARK Venture Fund, citing its regulatory compliance in the United States. In the U.S., these markets are regulated as derivatives by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Unlike traditional bookmaking, prediction market odds fluctuate continuously based on buyer and seller activity, and contracts can be traded at any time before an event resolves.
