Kalshi faces regulatory scrutiny over crypto trading patterns

Kalshi, a regulated prediction market exchange, is facing scrutiny following allegations of wash trading in its Ethereum perpetual futures market. Analysts noted a pattern of repetitive, fixed-size trades—specifically clustering around $5,500—which accounted for a significant portion of reported volume. Kalshi has denied any wrongdoing, attributing these patterns to its liquidity-provider program where market makers post fixed-size orders that are subsequently executed by various traders.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is reportedly reviewing the trading activity to determine if a formal enforcement investigation is warranted. While Kalshi maintains that the CFTC has not contacted them directly, the regulator has previously issued warnings regarding manipulation risks in 'mention markets' and the potential for high volume-based rewards to incentivize artificial trading.

In parallel, Kalshi is pursuing regulatory expansion. The company has filed with the CFTC to allow institutional traders to use margin on certain event contracts, a move that could attract larger financial firms by reducing capital requirements. Additionally, KalshiEX has proposed listing perpetual security futures for 58 stocks and ETFs, aiming to bring crypto-style perpetual mechanics into the US equity market.
