Manipur ethnic violence leaves nine dead across three districts

Fresh clashes between Kuki and Naga armed groups in Manipur’s Kamjong, Ukhrul, and Kangpokpi districts have resulted in at least nine deaths and widespread arson. The violence erupted Friday night in Chassad village, Kamjong district, following the death of Domkhonei Touthang, a 42-year-old Kuki woman and mother of five, who was reportedly shot during a confrontation involving security forces and local protesters.

Subsequent exchanges of gunfire between ethnic groups continued into Saturday. Identified victims include six members of the Naga community, two from the Kuki community, and one man of Nepali origin. In Ukhrul district, 40-year-old Sandeep Rai was shot dead in an ambush while driving his vehicle. In Kangpokpi, attacks on villages resulted in further fatalities and injuries.

Arsonists reportedly set fire to at least 14 houses and 20 shops across the affected regions. Authorities have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS within a 400-metre radius of the Chassad Police Gate Junction to prevent further assembly. The Committee on Tribal Unity has called for a 24-hour shutdown in Kangpokpi district in protest. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has appealed for peace and instructed authorities to restore order.
