Armed attacks on Naga villages in Manipur

In mid-August 2026, armed militants conducted a series of attacks on Naga villages in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur.

On August 11, assailants attacked Tokpa Naga Village, reportedly opening fire and setting several structures ablaze. The Liangmai Naga Council (LNC) reported that the arson destroyed approximately nine to ten residential houses and a church, while civilians were physically assaulted and had mobile phones seized at gunpoint. Local authorities expressed concern regarding potential dereliction of duty by security personnel stationed near the area.

On August 14, a subsequent attack in Langka Naga village resulted in the deaths of two Naga civilians, Wiriliangbou Chawang and Kawidinang Abonmai, and left three others injured. The LNC-Manipur and the Foothills Naga Coordinating Committee (FNCC) attributed the attack to suspected cadres of the Kuki National Front (P). In response to the violence, the LNC-M declared a total emergency shutdown of Liangmai Naga-inhabited areas, suspending non-essential activities. Local leaders have continued to question how armed groups can move through the region undetected by security outposts.
