Armed attacks and ethnic violence in Manipur

Overview

In mid-August 2026, armed militants conducted a series of attacks on Naga villages in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur. On August 11, assailants attacked Tokpa Naga Village, destroying residential houses and a church. Subsequent attacks in Langka Naga village on August 14 killed two Naga civilians. On August 27, four Naga civilians were killed in an ambush along the Imphal-Tamenglong Road, which the United Naga Council (UNC) attributed to Kuki militant groups. Tensions escalated on August 31 when three Kuki civilians were killed in N. Teikhang village. On September 2, a joint military operation targeted a United Kuki National Army (UKNA) camp, killing two militants. On September 13, four Kuki-Zo civilians were killed in Tamenglong and Noney districts. In late September, violence continued with the detention of six Kuki villagers in Kangpokpi, sparking protests that disrupted National Highway-2. On September 20, a Naga student was shot dead in a Tamei area ambush; the Joint Tribes Council Manipur (WC-JTCM) alleged the killing was a “premeditated ambush” by Kuki armed groups. On September 22, an electric lineman was shot in Lasan village, and 24 houses were destroyed in Makui Khuman and Makui Thanamba. On October 19, an ambush in the Khongbal Tangkhul area killed three Meitei civilians. This led to a 48-hour statewide shutdown called by the Native People’s Committee Manipur (NPCM) and Iramdam Kanba Lup (IKAL). Following the ambush, security forces arrested three suspects and seized a cache of weapons. On October 20, a 45-year-old Kuki-Zo man was shot in Kangpokpi, while the Kuki-Zo Women's Forum called for the reimposition of President's Rule. Following the October 19 ambush, security forces also raided the Sinai camp in Kangpokpi, seizing 24 firearms and detaining 17 individuals not identified as cadres under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.
