Kano building collapses kill five people

Five people died and ten others were injured following two separate building collapses in Kano State, Nigeria, on Saturday. The incidents occurred in the Kumbotso and Fagge Local Government Areas.

The first collapse took place in Gaida, Kumbotso, where a building under construction measuring approximately 50 by 50 feet fell on six workers. Four workers—Sunusi Surajo, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim Ibrahim, 25; and Abubakar, 30—were confirmed dead. Two others, Muhammad Hassan, 17, and Khalid Abubakar, 19, were rescued alive.

The second incident occurred at the Khadija Idris Bala Islamiyya School in Kurna, Fagge LGA. Nine students were affected by the collapse; eight were rescued, but 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad died after being rescued unconscious.

Reports indicate the collapses may have occurred during heavy rainfall. The Kano State Fire Service has launched an investigation into the causes and urged contractors and building owners to strictly adhere to safety precautions and approved building standards.
